Not one elk ever complained that its horns were cold, no matter how stormy the night or unbelievable the thermometer. Some would say this is because elk can't talk, but really it's because they're smart and, like all smart animals, they spend their coldest nights in The North Face Elkhorn -20 Degree Synthetic Sleeping Bag. Well, the elk-sized equivalent, anyway. Even though the Elkhorn has a roomy relaxed mummy design that's nice and spacious for a human, it won't really hold a full-grown elk, which is probably OK. As you might expect, a bag with this much synthetic Heatseeker insulation--which stays warm even if it gets wet, by the way--isn't ultra-light or packable, but if warmth is more important than covering long distances (if you're car-camping, say, or spending nights in an alpine hut or arctic research station), it's a damn good choice. Just throw your watch in the internal pocket, seal up the heat-trapping hood, and spend those polar nights thinking about how lucky you are not to be an elk.
